From tags sales to season closures, there’s a lot happening in Idaho during January that you should be aware of. Here are some important dates you should know to help you plan.

Pneumonia outbreak detected in Reynolds Creek bighorn sheep in Southwest Idaho
A pneumonia outbreak caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (M.ovi) was detected in the small herd of approximately 30 California bighorn sheep in Reynolds Creek, Unit 40, during routine disease surveillance in mid-December. Fish and Game staff are gathering information on the current outbreak and evaluating options to prevent further spread to neighboring herds where M.ovi has not been detected.
Wolf trapper certification courses slated throughout the state for 2026
Idaho Fish and Game is offering wolf trapper certification courses in 2026 throughout the state starting in January.

Whether you’re new to trapping, interested in wolf trapping, or preparing to hunt for the first time, Idaho Fish and Game’s Magic Valley Region will offer three education opportunities in Glenns Ferry over the coming months.

Fish and Game reminds the public to enjoy wildlife from a safe distance and to avoid feeding or approaching wildlife, as habituation can lead to increased risks for both humans and wildlife. Idaho Fish and Game has entered into a new Good Neighbor agreement with the Forest Service under the EXPLORE Act
By aligning with the Fish and Game mission, the agreement ensures that projects not only improve forest conditions but also sustain healthy wildlife populations, protect critical habitats, and expand opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation.
Fish and Game completes fish survey in the Snake River below American Falls Dam in southeast Idaho
Last month, Idaho Fish and Game completed a fish survey in the Snake River below American Falls Dam and tagged 200 trout. Surveys like this one reveal important information about fish populations which helps inform management decisions moving forward.
