Fishing Tournaments

A segment of the angling public enjoys the competitive atmosphere provided by fishing contests, tournaments, and derbies.

IDFG has the statutory authority to regulate fishing contests, and to help ensure they do not affect fish populations and to help reduce or avoid angler conflict, IDFG administers a permit system.

Do I need a permit for a tournament or contest?

Any person or entity sponsoring any organized fishing event that charges an entry fee or offers any prize(s) will need a permit in cases where any of the following apply:
•    Has a live-fish weigh-in
•    Expects 20 or more participants.
•    Total cash or prize(s) of $1,000 or more in value.

Events organized wholly for youth under the age of fourteen (14) are excluded from the requirement for a Fishing Contest Permit.
