Hunters: Help us monitor for CWD by submitting samples from your harvested deer

idfg-scassinelli

Although Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has not been found in Idaho, we need your help collecting samples from your harvested deer as we continue to monitor Idaho’s wildlife for this contagious and fatal neurological disease.

CWD affects members of the deer family, including mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, and moose, and there is no cure. Some of Idaho’s neighboring states; Montana, Utah, and Wyoming, have confirmed cases of CWD.

By submitting a sample, you will help us increase the number of deer tested in the state.

For those hunting in areas near states with known CWD cases, you may have received a sample kit in the mail or an email with information on how to request one.

If you did not receive a kit or would like to request one, email wildlifelab@idfg.idaho.gov or contact an Idaho Fish and Game regional office. Some sample drop-off sites around the state also provide materials to leave samples.

Each kit comes with instructions on how to collect and submit a lymph node sample. You can also visit our How to Collect a CWD Sample webpage for step-by-step instructions and videos.

We’ve made it easy to submit a CWD sample at a location closest to you. Freezers and barrels are located at some of our regional offices, check stations, local businesses, and popular highway routes.

See a list of drop-off locations for information on availability, types of samples (lymph nodes or heads), and special instructions.
