Locations and information for submitting samples to test for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Idaho

Find a sample drop-off location to have your harvested deer, elk, or moose tested for chronic wasting disease. Locations below are hyperlinked with more detailed information. From head and lymph node barrels and freezers to check stations to Fish and Game regional offices, hunters have a variety of options to have their animals tested for CWD.

Testing Information

CWD testing is mandatory in GMUs 14, 18, 23, 24, 32A, 63A and a portion of Unit 1. See special hunting rules.

Where testing is not mandatory, hunters are encouraged to submit a sample from their harvested deer, elk, or moose to help monitor other units in the state. Testing is free. 

Sample Collection

Sample collection occurs throughout the state. Different locations, times and outlets have been set up in which to collect samples. Below is list of dates, times, and outlets.

Full Service - Staffed

Check Station – Check stations are used to collect data (including required hunter reporting) from harvested animals and engage with hunters. Biological samples including Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) samples may be collected at check stations. All hunters, anglers and trappers are required to stop at a check station if encountered while in the field.

Sampling Site - Established sites where staff collect CWD samples from hunter-harvested animals. These are voluntary stops when in operation.

Regional Office – Each regional office is equipped to collect samples from hunter-harvested animals through staff supported collection, self-service drop off in freezers, head barrels, or coolers. Open during regular business hours.

Self Service - Non-Staffed

Head Barrel – Lymph nodes and heads of hunter-harvested animals can be dropped off at these locations. Follow the directions on the signage on site.

Freezer - Lymph nodes and heads of hunter-harvested animals can be dropped off at these locations. Follow the directions on the signage on site.

Cooler – Typically, lymph nodes of hunter-harvested animals can be dropped off at these locations. Follow the directions on the signage on site.
