Chronic Wasting Disease - Sample Focus Areas

Although CWD has not been found in Idaho, it has been expanding in some neighboring states. In response, Idaho Fish and Game has updated its CWD strategy and monitoring efforts.

Areas close to states with known CWD cases will be sampled every year and other areas in Idaho on a rotational basis. Hunting units are grouped into our CWD sampling areas.

View the map below to see deer sampling areas for 2020. Hunters who harvest deer in these areas are encouraged to provide Fish and Game with samples from their deer. If you harvest a deer outside sampling areas or elk from anywhere in the state, we will be happy to take and submit samples from your animal.

Northern Idaho

White-tailed deer only
Game units being sampled include: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8A, 9, 10, 10A, 11, 11A, 12, and 13  

Eastern Idaho

Mule deer only
Game units being sampled include: 21, 21A, 29, 30, 30A, 37, 37A, 51, 58, 59A, 59, 60, 60A, 61, 62, 62A, 63A, 64, 65, 66, 66A, 67, 69, 71, 72, and 76.
