Idaho Fish and Game

Salmon River, fall Chinook Salmon boundary

Proposal

Extend the upstream boundary for the fall Chinook salmon fishery on the Salmon River an additional 25 miles upstream.

Rationale

Increased abundance of fall Chinook salmon in the Salmon River upstream of Riggins has led to increased incidental catches by anglers targeting steelhead.  Anglers have expressed a desire to harvest these fall Chinook salmon, which would be best accomplished by moving the upstream boundary for the fall Chinook fishery an additional 25 miles upstream to the uppermost Vinegar Creek boat ramp.

While additional fall Chinook salmon fishing effort is not expected to be substantial, this allows the additional harvest opportunity requested by anglers and is not expected to increase incidental take of ESA-listed fishes.

Review the proposal below and submit by June 10, 2024, at 6 p.m. MDT.

After reviewing feedback and considering agency goals, season recommendations will be presented to the Commission for their consideration at the July 2024 meeting.
