E-Tagging: A better way to track your catch in Idaho

idfg-jbruns

For salmon and steelhead anglers looking to simplify their time on the water, e-tagging offers an alternative to traditional paper tagging. Available through the GoOutdoorsIdaho app, this digital option makes it easy to record salmon and steelhead harvests quickly and efficiently.

How does it work?

Instead of the hassle of carrying and filling out paper tags, anglers can log their harvest directly on their phone. It’s quick, convenient, and fits seamlessly into your fishing routine. E-tagging puts everything you need in the palm of your hand, allowing you to instantly log your catch with just a few taps.

“E-tagging helps us manage fisheries with greater precision,” said Regional Fisheries Biologist Don Whitney. “Accurate reporting from anglers is essential to managing these fisheries, and every digitally recorded harvest helps Fish and Game make timely, well-informed management decisions.”

Getting started is easy:

  1. Log into or create an account at GoOutdoorsIdaho.com
  2. Click the "Buy Licenses, Permits, and Tags" tile on the home page
  3. Locate the Salmon and/or Steelhead permits from the catalog and click "Add to Cart"
  4. Once in the cart, ensure the fulfillment option next to each permit is selected as "E-tag". Note that changing this selection to "Only Mailed" will result in the purchase of a paper permit, and e-tagging will not be eligible.
  5. Click "Checkout Now" and complete the transaction.
  6. Download the GoOutdoorsIdaho mobile app, sync your licenses and permits, and you're ready to begin e-tagging!

Anglers with a current paper permit cannot switch to e-tagging for the 2026 season, but will have the option in 2027.
