Anyone hunting black bears in Idaho in 2025 must pass a bear ID test

Spring black bear controlled hunt draw results are now available at GoOutdoorsIdaho.com.

Email notifications will be sent to those who provided an email address on their profile, others can check results at any license vendor or Fish and Game regional office. It is the applicant's responsibility to see if they were successful in the drawing and purchase their tag.

Successful applicants can buy the controlled hunt tag through their GoOutdoorsIdaho.com customer account, at any Fish and Game regional office, at any license vendor, or by calling (800) 554-8685. Tags purchased online, or over the phone will include an additional convenience fee and will be mailed to the mailing address on file.

Bear identification test is now mandatory

Effective Jan. 1, anyone hunting black bears in Idaho must show proof that they have passed a bear identification test to help them differentiate between black bears and grizzly bears. To learn more, and take the test, go to the bear identification webpage.  The test is free, and hunters only have to pass it once.

Hunters who already have a general season black bear tag may exchange their general season black bear tag for the appropriate controlled hunt tag. Alternatively, they may keep their general season black bear tag and purchase a controlled hunt black bear tag.

Any exchanges of tags must be done at an Idaho Fish and Game office, and reduced priced tags or second black bear tags cannot be exchanged for a controlled hunt tag.
