Citizens who would like to submit observations to IDFG have many different avenues depending on their identification needs and their familiarity with existing data portals:
- eBird (Cornell) - Users with existing eBird user accounts are encouraged to submit their observations through their eBird accounts. eBird regional reviewers regularly review rare and unusual bird user reports and can help with IDs of species. Due to the large quantities of data and review times, IFWIS incorporates these points on an annual basis into our Idaho Natural Heritage Program Database. eBird has a well built out mobile application as well that allows users to submit checklists on their phone. Users can also pair this application with the Merlin mobile app that helps users ID birds in the field
- iNaturalist - Users with existing iNaturalists user accounts are encouraged to submit their observations through their iNaturalist accounts. iNaturalists aggregate identification system can help users quickly gain IDs or verification of their observations. IFWIS incorporates these points bimonthly into our Idaho Naturalist Heritage Program Database. iNaturalist has a well built out mobile application that allows users to submit checklists on their phone. Users can pair this application with the Seek mobile app that helps users ID species via robust image models.
Confident on your species ID and want to submit observations directly to IDFG?
- Submit through our Survey 123 - IDFG has a survey 123 form on the web and downloadable on your phone that makes submitting observations directly to us easy. These observations go directly into our database and can be immediately queried by IDFG staff or our Regional Diversity Biologists. Due to IDFG staffs very busy schedules and time constraints, staff may not be able to help ID species very quickly. Therefore, this avenue is best if you are confident with your ID and would just like to share it with us.
