Citizens who would like to submit observations to IDFG have many different avenues depending on their identification needs and their familiarity with existing data portals:

  • eBird (Cornell) - Users with existing eBird user accounts are encouraged to submit their observations through their eBird accounts. eBird regional reviewers regularly review rare and unusual bird user reports and can help with IDs of species. Due to the large quantities of data and review times, IFWIS incorporates these points on an annual basis into our Idaho Natural Heritage Program Database. eBird has a well built out mobile application as well that allows users to submit checklists on their phone. Users can also pair this application with the Merlin mobile app that helps users ID birds in the field
  • iNaturalist - Users with existing iNaturalists user accounts are encouraged to submit their observations through their iNaturalist accounts. iNaturalists aggregate identification system can help users quickly gain IDs or verification of their observations. IFWIS incorporates these points bimonthly into our Idaho Naturalist Heritage Program Database. iNaturalist has a well built out mobile application that allows users to submit checklists on their phone. Users can pair this application with the Seek mobile app that helps users ID species via robust image models.
