April hunter education courses offered in Challis

Complete course now so you can apply for controlled hunts

Future hunters who have not taken a hunter education course, but are interested in applying for a controlled hunt, still have a chance of getting into a course before the application periods end.

Anyone born after January 1, 1975 must complete a hunter education course as a prerequisite to purchasing a hunting license - and a hunting license is required to apply for a controlled hunt.

A hunter & bowhunter combination instructor-led course is scheduled in Challis on April 1-4, 8-11 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each evening, with a field exercise and exam planned for April 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Designed for youth 9 years of age or anyone new to hunting, students who take this two week course will be certified in both hunter and bowhunter education.

Another option is the hunter education online course, where students are required to pass a field day and exam before they can be certified. A field day is scheduled in Challis on April 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The online course is designed for older students with good reading comprehension.

Both courses will be taught at the Challis Elementary School at 950 Bluff Avenue.

To register or for more details, go online to Fish and Game’s website at https://idfg.idaho.gov/hunt/education, or visit the Fish and Game office in Salmon at 99 Highway 93 North.

The controlled hunt application period for moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat ends May 1, with the application period for deer, elk, pronghorn, fall black bear and fall turkey ending June 5.
