Think Like an Elk: Tools to Help Forest Land Managers Improve Habitat in Northern Idaho Forests

Land managers in northern forests of Idaho now have new, science-based tools to improve elk habitat. The “Think Like an Elk” handouts and video tutorial were developed to help forestry professionals better integrate elk habitat needs into forest treatments.

The materials focus on enhancing summer habitat, which research shows is critical for elk survival and reproduction. By improving summer forage, managers can help elk build the body fat needed to survive winter and produce healthy calves.

Guidance is organized around two key questions: how to improve forage across forest types and how to design treatment layouts that encourage elk use. The tools emphasize the importance of balancing forage, cover, and connectivity across the landscape.

These paired resources translate current research into practical recommendations and strategies for on-the-ground applications.
