The Salmon area is home to the Salmon River, one of the few undammed waterways left in America. The river and its forks serve as the only pathways into the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness area, the largest single federally designated wilderness in the lower 48. Steelhead and salmon start and end their 900-mile journey to the ocean in this region of Idaho. Nine of Idaho’s big game animals roam the valleys and mountains in this area.

The Salmon Region contains high mountains and wild rivers ranging from 12,514-foot Mount Borah to the Salmon River at around 3,000 feet.
Helicopter flights to survey deer population near Salmon and Challis begin soon
Beginning in mid-December, Idaho Fish and Game staff will begin low-level helicopter surveys to get a closer look at deer numbers in the Salmon and Challis areas. The flights will be completed in big game management units 21, 21A, 27, 28 and 36B are expected to take a week if the weather permits.
Johnson Pond near Salmon stocked with warmwater fish
Anglers in the Salmon Region now have a new flavor of fish to catch, as a mix of over 780 largemouth bass and sunfish were recently added to Johnson Pond. The fish were collected from Moose Creek Reservoir near Bovill, which was being drawn down this winter.
Salmon Region irrigators asked to contact Fish and Game before turning water off this fall
With the irrigation season winding down and efforts to keep fish out of ditches, local irrigators who divert water from rivers and streams in Idaho’s Salmon Region are asked to call Idaho Fish and Game’s Fish Screen Program at 756-6022 several days before shutting off their water for the season.
Salmon Region waters to be stocked with trout in October
Idaho Fish and Game staff in the Salmon Region will stock 1,900 trout in the 10-12-inch range at four area waters in October.
Avoid bear conflicts by storing food and garbage properly
Idaho Fish and Game reminds people that most conflicts with bears can be avoided by properly storing their food and garbage. The same cautions apply to homeowners in bear country – which essentially means most of Idaho.
