If you are on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River this summer, you just might see a group of folks floating past you wearing wetsuits and snorkel masks. It is likely Idaho Fish and Game conducting annual snorkel surveys of fish populations. A tremendous amount of effort to better understand and monitor salmon and steelhead populations in the Middle Fork has been underway since the 1970s.

Each year, fisheries biologists in McCall conduct a routine gill-netting survey on Lake Cascade to monitor trends in the fish community. Perch numbers are up, and anglers should continue to catch good numbers and sizes of rainbow trout and kokanee in Lake Cascade this winter and next spring.
