Changes in fall Chinook Salmon rules

Hi everybody.  Our Director recently signed a Closure Order that will make it illegal to harvest adult fall Chinook Salmon with an adipose fin in the Snake and Salmon rivers.  This change will take effect at 12:00 am on October 5, 2019.

The reason for this rule change is we are nearing the impacts we are allowed to have on wild adult fall Chinook Salmon in the Snake and Salmon rivers.  Restricting harvest to only those adult salmon with a clipped adipose fin will allow us to keep the season open longer.

Anglers should also note that although the catch-and-release record is wide open, they can keep any coho they catch, with or without an adipose fin, as long as they have a valid salmon permit.

  • Capturing Small Salmon and Steelhead on the North Fork Salmon River

Beginning on July 1st 2015, the Salmon Region fisheries staff will operate a fish trap on the North Fork of the Salmon River. A fish trap captures small salmon and steelhead in streams and rivers. Once we capture fish, we place a tag in the fish that helps us track them throughout their life. Once we have tagged these fish we can follow these fish from their home in the North Fork Salmon River to the ocean and back again.
