Poachers sought for killing, wasting South Hills deer

idfg-nnokkentved
Despite sub-zero temperatures, bitter wind chills and drifting snow, two mule deer bucks were shot and left to waste this past week in the South Hills. "This is a reoccurring problem every winter," Senior Conservation Officer Jim Stirling said. "We had half-dozen similar incidents last year. We have large groups of deer that are very accessible, vulnerable and visible this time of year. "For some that is just too much temptation," he continued. "Deer have enough to worry about during the winter. They are trying to find food, stay warm and limit the amount of energy they use. They shouldn't have to worry about poachers." There is evidence that the individuals responsible for these killings planned to take parts of the deer but got scared and left the whole animal to waste, he said. "I urge hunters and anyone who enjoys wildlife to be aware of your surroundings when in the field," Stirling said. "It's going to take the help of the public to apprehend and prosecute these violators." Anyone with information about these crimes or any wildlife crime is asked to call the Citizens Against Poaching hotline at 1-800-632-5999 or their local Sheriff's office. Callers may remain anonymous and a reward may be issued for information leading to a conviction.
