Mule Deer Survey Results Available

Hunters in Idaho expect a tall challenge from the Idaho Department Fish and Game in managing mule deer populations and hunting opportunities. At least that was what the preliminary results suggest in a Fish and Game's mule deer hunter survey. Complete results of the mule deer opinion survey are available at Fish and Game's Website at: http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/hunt/MDI/. One of the most important factors the survey revealed was that hunters want to hunt every year, and they want Fish and Game to manage for more and larger bucks. "This is an important part of our mule deer planning process," said Brad Compton, Fish and Game big game manager. "The information we extrapolate from this survey will be key in how we manage mule deer for the next 10 years." The survey was conducted for Idaho Fish and Game by the University of Idaho as part of the effort to revise the statewide mule deer management plan, which is being completed this year. Nearly 5,000 people responded to the survey. Among the interesting stats gleaned from the survey, show the average mule deer hunter:
  • Is between 44 and 49 years old.
  • Has lived here 23 years.
  • Is willing to accept additional restrictions to improve deer populations and hunting opportunity.
  • Has hunted mule deer for 20 years.
And 90 percent of mule deer hunters are male.
