Mountain Lion Sought In Orofino

idfg-staff
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) has requested assistance from local hound hunters in locating an errant mountain lion near the outskirts of Orofino. However, with the recent warm weather and lack of snow, tracking the lion has made scent trailing for the hounds very difficult. It is hoped that if the lion can be treed, it can be tranquilized and released away from the area. Mountain lions are common in the forests near Orofino, but are thought to be attracted to the area because of deer and wild turkey, which find refuge from hunters near the city's confines. Conflicts with mountain lions are also increased when homeowners feed wildlife near their homes or store garbage outdoors. IDFG strongly urges the public to refrain from feeding deer and turkey and properly dispose of any garbage on their property. Orofino residents are asked to report any mountain lion sightings immediately by calling IDFG at 799-5010 or Clearwater County Sheriff's office at 476-4521.
