Learn Why Birds Matter at Migratory Bird Day Event May 10

idfg-sliebenthal
Not everyone is aware of the diversity of birds around the world, the amazing migrations some take, and the extraordinary range of behaviors, plumages, and songs they exhibit. International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) 2014 shares the many ways in which birds matter to the earth, to ecosystems, and of course, to us. Some bird species provide practical solutions to problems, such as the need for insect and rodent control. Others disperse seeds, helping to revegetate disturbed areas. Others are pollinators, ensuring that we are graced with flowering plants, trees, and shrubs. Join us in raising awareness of birds and why they matter through an International Migratory Bird Festival on Saturday, May 10th from 7:00am-2:00pm at the Lewiston Wildlife Habitat Area located next to the Fish and Game office on Warner Ave. Bird mist nets will be set-up by 7:00am in hopes to catch early morning migrants. Arrive early for the best bird viewing experience! Bird themed activities and habitat area tours will run every half hour from 9:00am-2:00pm. Hot dogs donated from Rosauers and soda donated from Pepsi will be available for lunch on a first-come first serve basis. Vehicles will leave the Lewiston Habitat Area starting at 2:00pm for an afternoon birding tour near Mann Lake. International Migratory Bird Day is the largest-known conservation and education event of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Lewiston's own Wildlife Habitat Area provides 5 acres of wetland, forest, and grassland habitat for migrating, nesting, and wintering birds. Year-round nature related activities are offered for visitors. Contact the Lewiston fish and game office 208-799-5010 or visit the International Migratory Bird Day website at http://birdday.org for more information on bird day resources, activities, literature and events around the country.
