Hunter numbers comparable to last year

Opening weekend hunter numbers were comparable to past years at the South Fork Clearwater check station near Mount Idaho. A total of 169 hunters visited the check station, compared to last season’s opening weekend visitation of 124 hunters. In 2016, check station hunter numbers were 176 on the first weekend of the season.

Elk and deer numbers checked in at the regional check station were consistent with the last several years. Staff checked in 4 elk this weekend, compared to 6 elk in 2017 and 8 elk in 2016. Deer numbers were also somewhat comparable with 17 deer checked compared to 13 in 2017 and 36 in 2016.

Opening weekend weather was comparable the last two years. Sunny skies, light wind and cool temperatures made for a pleasant weekend to be afield. The majority of successful hunters harvested does and smaller bucks with a couple larger bodied animals. Harvested deer seemed to be in good body condition.

Most violations are made by hunters that failed to properly notch their tag and leave evidence of sex on their animal. Remember to stop at check stations, wear your hunter orange and be safe and courteous in the field.
