Civilian Marksmanship Program
The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is a national program dedicated to training and educating U. S. citizens, with an emphasis on youth, in the responsible use of firearms and airguns through gun safety training, marksmanship training and competitions.
New participants are always welcome at a CMP Match, as are spectators.
Sponsored by the Idaho Automatic Weapons Collector’s Association (IAWCA), CMP matches are a great opportunity for shooters to hone their rifle shooting skills. Available to both long-time and first-time shooters, these matches are a fun way to become more proficient with service rifles including the AR 15/M16, M1A/M14 and M1 Garand. CMP matches may be shot with bolt guns, but shooters will need to use stripper clips to reload rapidly. An “open class” is available that allows shooters to use any rifle.
Each CMP Match consists of four stages with a total count of 58 rounds fired. The best possible score is a 500, consisting of 50 rounds of record inside the 10X ring. Here’s a description of a typical CMP Match:
1st Stage – Slow Fire Standing, Single Load Only
The rifle sling may not be used in this stage and shooters have 12 minutes to fire two (optional) sighting shots and 10 record shots on a short range bullseye target at 200 yards.
2nd Stage – Standing to Sitting Position, Rapid Fire
This stage requires a mandatory reload/magazine change, and shooters have 60 seconds to fire two (optional) sighting shots and 10 record shots on a short range bullseye target at 200 yards.
3rd Stage – The Standing to Prone Position, Rapid Fire
This stage requires a mandatory reload/magazine change, and shooters have 70 seconds to fire two (optional) sighting shots and 10 record shots at a SR-42 bullseye target at 200 yards.
4th Match – Slow Fire Prone Single Load Only
Shooters have two minutes to fire two (optional) sighting shots and 20 minutes to fire 20 record shots at an MR-52 bullseye target at 200 yards.
