Winter feeding last occurred in the late 90’s in the Stanley area.
Feb. 13, 2017 status report
Large numbers of elk are still winter on, and adjacent to agriculture fields in the Salmon Region. Warmer temperatures and rain this week caused snow to begin to melt. Landowners and members of the public have noticed groups of elk moving to higher elevations on south-facing slopes. As a result, depredations complaints dropped. Regional staff received just three during the week.
Snow measurements and temperature data have been gathered in the Sawtooth Basin and in the area around North Fork. To date, emergency criteria used to evaluate the need for winter feeding have not been met.
