Southeast Winter Feeding Report Feb. 13, 2017

idfg-mkeckler

History

The Southeast Region has significant history of winter feeding and has an active Winter Feeding Advisory Committee.

Feb. 13, 2017 status report

Daily rain and melting snow is causing flooding in many parts of the Southeast Region.  Deer and elk feed consumption at winter feeding grounds decreased substantially this past week as forage began to appear from beneath the snow on south-facing hillsides.  Elk have also began to disperse from feed sites but not at the rate of deer.  Some initial reports indicate an increase in elk in some places as receding show allows stragglers to reach feed grounds.  The feed grounds will continue to operate as long as they are accessible and animals continue to use them.

The Southeast Region has 87 feed sites established.

Approximately 8,500 deer, over 3,000 elk and over 200 pronghorn are utilizing the sites.
