January 30, 2017 status report

The winter feeding advisory committee met on Jan. 23 and discussed the criteria, current conditions, elk numbers and depredation hot spots. They decided that emergency feeding was not warranted.

Large numbers of elk are wintering on and adjacent to agriculture fields, but are not currently at significant risk of winter mortality. Depredation complaints are high and Fish and Game staff is busy with complaints about elk. The department significantly increased elk permits in the Salmon Region to lower elk numbers and haze animals away from private property. Additional depredation hunts were recently added in an attempt to address elk causing problems on agriculture land.

Snow measurements and temperatures have been gathered in the Sawtooth Basin and around North Fork. We have not met the emergency feeding criteria in place for the region in either location. The area had moderating temperatures and no new snow over in late January. No significant snow crusting has developed.
