About the position

Cabinet Gorge Fish Hatchery is seeking one 4-month temporary Fisheries Biological Aide-Trap Tender (non-benefited) to assist with trapping and spawning of late run Kokanee. The position will be from Sept 21, 2026 – Feb 13, 2026.

Cabinet Gorge Fish Hatchery is located 8 miles east of the town of Clark Fork. Approximately 8 million late spawning Kokanee eggs are collected in the fall to fulfill Kokanee stocking requests throughout the state. The hatchery operates a remote fish trap on Granite Creek, a tributary of Lake Pend Oreille and spawns Kokanee at this location. Eggs are transported to the hatchery for rearing. Cabinet Gorge Fish Hatchery also rears a Westslope Cutthroat Trout broodstock. The hatchery fulfills lowland and mountain lake stocking requests for Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Coho Salmon, and Kokanee.

General Information
Incumbent must, with or without reasonable accommodation, be able to stand and work in adverse weather conditions, sometimes working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout a day. Shifts are usually 10 days on and 4 days off during November. The Granite Creek trap has a bunk house and Verizon cell service is available. Incumbent will receive per diem for days at the Granite Creek trap. Most workdays are from 7:00am to 4:00pm and generally work 40 hours per week.
Qualifications
Applicants must be able to work well in a team environment and independently in a remote setting as needed, take direction, and follow protocols effectively. Applicants must be well organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, responsible, and safety conscious. Must be at least 18 years of age, read, write, compute simple math, and have a valid driver’s license. Fisheries related experience and education is strongly preferred, but not required.
Responsibilities
Assist in the trapping and spawning of Kokanee and perform routine trap tending duties such as maintaining fish weir, cleaning cabin, cooking meals and other duties as assigned. When not trapping or spawning, incumbent will work at the Cabinet Gorge Hatchery, assisting with fish culture duties.
