About the position

SPECIAL NOTIFICATION: This position is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission. The Magic Valley Region is seeking a biological aide (bio-aide) to assist with fishing clinics throughout the Magic Valley area. Duties may include registering participants; teaching and demonstrating fishing techniques and proper catch care methods, such as fish cleaning and filleting; maintaining inventory of fishing poles and equipment; performing minor repairs on fishing poles and reels; and assisting with other public outreach efforts as needed (e.g., setup and takedown at local fairs, educational presentations, etc.).

This is a 4-month, non-benefitted position.

General information:

As a member of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, bio-aides will travel to regional lakes and ponds to assist with Trout in the Classroom and Take Me Fishing trailer events. These events are hosted out of the Take Me Fishing trailer which provides fishing poles, bait, and instruction at no charge. 

This position requires good public speaking skills since the incumbent will regularly interact with the public, of all ages. 

This is a part-time position with a typical work week up to 30 hours per week. No overnight travel is required. 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to instruct and demonstrate fishing activities
  • Applicants must interact with the public in a professional and positive manner, work independently, and follow set protocols
  • Applicants should be detail oriented, self-motivated, and safety conscious
  • Must be able to safely operate a half-ton truck while towing a small cargo trailer
  • With or without reasonable accommodations, incumbents must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time and work in wide range of weather conditions.

Desired qualifications: 

  • Good knowledge of Idaho fishing and hunting rules
  • Ability to identify common sport fish and big game species of Idaho
  • Demonstrated youth education or outreach experience a plus 

Responsibilities: 

  • Check-in and distribute loaner fishing rods and bait to participants
  • Teach and demonstrate fishing techniques
  • Teach fish cleaning and filleting
  • Answer questions about fishing and current fishing rules and regulations.
  • Conduct minor repairs of fishing poles and reels
  • Safely operate a half-ton truck while towing a small cargo trailer
  • Record and maintain daily records of participating at events
  • Assist with additional public outreach and education efforts
  • Support the Regional Communications Manager and Volunteer Services Coordinator with other tasks as needed
