About the position

Idaho Department of Fish and Game is hiring 4 Field Technicians to assist with a study on the effects of timber harvest and post-harvest treatments on elk and deer nutrition. Field sampling will be a combination of clipping understory plants identified as acceptable forage, and measuring percent cover by species via line-point-intercept. Previous experience in vegetation sampling is preferred, and plant identification skills are a must. An intensive 4-day course on native plant identification will be provided.

Technicians will be expected to operate 4 WD trucks and ATVs on forest roads and be able to hike 3-5 miles in steep, uneven terrain while carrying packs up to 40 lbs. Other duties will include maintaining vehicles and equipment and deploying ARUs and remote cameras. Housing (in camp trailers) and food will be provided while working in the field. Study sites will be spread across northern Idaho. 

Qualifications
Must have strong communication skills and the ability to interact well with coworkers and the public, be detail-oriented and organized, navigate and work independently in remote settings in adverse weather conditions, be able to lift/carry up to 60 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodations, have experience with 4x4 trucks and off-road vehicles in rugged conditions, able to hike in excess of 5 miles per day, and be able to follow a rigid protocol and record detailed data in a field setting.

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good knowledge of wildlife management principles and practices. Must have a good working knowledge of PC operation and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access).

Preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field and with previous field experience including: veg sampling, use of ArcGIS or Google Earth, sample handling and data management and analysis (including programming with R).
