The Magic Valley Region is seeking two temporary Wildlife Diversity Technicians (non-benefited) to conduct aquatic Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) surveys, focused primarily on crayfish, across southern Idaho. The main objective of this project is to determine abundance and distribution of Pilose crayfish (Pacifastacus gambelii) and Snake River Pilose crayfish (Pacifastacus connectens).
Technicians are expected to have excellent communication skills, be able to follow detailed survey protocols, and take thorough survey notes in the field. Technicians will be responsible for data entry and organization.
This position requires considerable physical activity. With or without reasonable accommodations, employees must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time and walk around on slick substrates in moving water, hike and car camp in hot and dry weather, have sufficient strength to perform the duties of the position including moderate lifting (up to 65 pounds), and hiking over uneven terrain through thick vegetation. Incumbents must have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable surveying for rare species they may not encounter. Incumbents must be flexible with work duties and schedule, capable of navigating in the field with a GPS or mobile device, and comfortable working and/or camping in remote locations. Fieldwork will be primarily unsupervised and will require following check-in/out procedures.
Preferred qualifications:
Working toward or completed a bachelor’s degree in wildlife, invertebrate, or fish ecology or a related field. Experience driving 4x4 vehicles and surveying for aquatic invertebrates is also desired.
