About the position

The Southeast Regional Office in Pocatello, ID is seeking two Fisheries Biological Aides ($15.00, non-benefitted) to join the fisheries management team for the 2026 field season. Selected applicants will gain valuable experience surveying both warm and cold-water species using various sampling gears and interacting with the public. Applicants may apply through March 13, 2026, but the announcement may close early if qualified candidates are found. Start and end dates are flexible.  

General Information
Fieldwork for both positions generally consists of 40-50 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, though night, weekend, and holiday work will be required at times. Some duties will require overnight camping in remote settings, camping equipment and groceries will be provided on these trips. With or without reasonable accommodation, incumbents must be able to hike up to ten miles a day over rugged terrain carrying a large backpack; stand and work in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in rough terrain and work in difficult weather conditions.
Qualifications
At a minimum, applicants should have some knowledge of fish identification, life history, anatomy, and ecology of various species and an interest in fisheries management. The incumbent must have a valid driver's license.
Desired qualifications include enrollment in a fisheries, wildlife, or related undergraduate program; the ability to collect accurate data; navigation skills with topographical maps/GPS; works well independently and as part of a team; good handwriting; attention to detail; mechanical skills and maintaining a positive attitude and strong work ethic through varied field conditions are all competitive qualities.
Responsibilities
Duties for these positions will include electrofishing streams, rivers, reservoirs, and lakes; trailering outboard motorboats; gill netting and trap netting reservoirs; collecting biological samples; processing live and dead fish to collect biological data, tagging fish (T-bar anchor tags and PIT tags); maintaining and repairing equipment (sampling equipment, vehicles, boats, etc.); and collecting, recording, and managing data.
