About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Fishery Technician. This position will be located at our Oxbow Fish Hatchery located in Oxbow, Or. This is a temporary 8 month benefited position and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week; Housing is available for the employee only. No pets.

General Information
Oxbow Hatchery is located in the scenic Hells Canyon National Recreation Area at the border of Idaho and Oregon on the Snake River. A major reconstruction project was completed in this Idaho Power owned facility in 2025. It is a modern facility that traps and spawns steelhead and Chinook salmon that arrive at the trap located below Hells Canyon Dam.
Incumbents may be required to travel to remote locations for fish trapping, spawning or sampling operations. This position involves standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; and working in extreme weather conditions. Incumbents working at fish hatcheries work with toxic chemicals and around heavy dust, high voltage, loud noises, and slippery surfaces. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required)
• Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species.
• Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems.
• Valid driver's license.
• Some knowledge of aquaculture and/or the growing and maintaining of fish.
Responsibilities
Data collection:

• Operates fish traps to collect fish
• Measures and weighs fish
• Collects scale samples and checks for tags
• Prepares biological specimens and records information
• Records information from recovered tags
• Summarizes and reports on biological information collected

Equipment operation:

• Riding mowers, pressure washers, small equipment
• Electric raceway crowders; Electroanesthetic basket
• Automatic 1-ton trucks with fish tanks
• Inspects equipment to insure proper working order

Aquaculture:

• Spawns fish
• Assists in monitoring development of eggs and fry
• Cleans incubation stacks and raceways
• Observes fish behavior for signs of stress or disease
• Implements water and prophylactic measures as directed;
• Removes and enumerates daily fish mortality
• Tracks hatchery inventory of various species and sizes of fish
• Loads, transports, and stocks fish
• Maintains records and contributes to reports documenting hatchery activities
• Data entry
• Fish diseases and treatments
