About the position

The Pocatello Regional Office is seeking one Fisheries Technicians ($18.61, benefitted) to join the fisheries management team for the 2026 field season. This position will primarily focus on assisting with sampling efforts across the region. Selected applicants will gain valuable experience interacting with the public and surveying both warm and cold-water species using various sampling gears. Office and laboratory work will extend into the winter. Applicants can apply through February 27, 2026, but the announcement may close early if qualified candidates are found. 

General Information
Fieldwork weeks generally consist of 40-50 hours, typically Monday through Friday, though night, weekend, and holiday work will be required at times. Some duties will require overnight camping in remote settings, camping equipment and groceries will be provided on trips. With or without reasonable accommodation, incumbents must be able to hike up to ten miles a day over rugged terrain carrying a large backpack; stand and work in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in rough terrain and work in difficult weather conditions.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications require the incumbent has some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of fish species; experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; identifying various fish species; operating an outboard and/or jet motorboat; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems and a valid driver's license.

Desired qualifications include but are not limited to: a completed Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, biology, environmental science or related discipline; excellent data management, independent decision making and communication skills, experience troubleshooting and maintaining outboard motors and trailering boats, experience sampling fish; proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with R Studio, ability to navigate with topographical maps/GPS; good handwriting skills, experience leading crews and working independently, experience mounting and ageing hard structures of fishes; completed a state hunter safety or other gun safety course.
Responsibilities
From April to the end of June, this position will primarily be responsible for leading pelican hazing efforts on the Blackfoot River. After July 1, primary duties will include assisting with fish population surveys on streams, lakes, and reservoirs. Sampling methods will include gill netting, boat and backpack electrofishing, trap netting and trawling. Other duties will include conducting occasional creel surveys, processing otoliths and spines for ageing fish, entering data into the statewide database, and instructing inexperienced seasonal staff in sampling protocols. Technician will be responsible for data collection and management, as well as maintaining a variety of motorized equipment.
