About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking (3) Fishery Technicians to assist in conducting research and monitoring on the Kootenai White Sturgeon population in North Idaho. These positions will be located at our MacArthur Field Station in Naples, Idaho. These are full time (40 hours per week) 5-month, non-benefitted temporary positions expected to start mid-May 2026. Housing is available for the employee only. No pets.

General Information
Incumbents may be required to travel to remote locations for fish tagging, trapping, or sampling operations. These positions involve walking several miles over rugged terrain and along stream banks; working on boats and in cold water for up to 10 hours; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds for short distances; trailering and operating inboard jet boats; and working in extreme weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have experience conducting a variety of fisheries sampling techniques, understand basic scientific sampling design, and be able to accurately collect data in adverse conditions. They will also demonstrate a strong work ethic, emotional intelligence, and cooperation within a team setting. Additional consideration may be given at the time of the interview to candidates who have this experience. Please be sure to include within your application any experience you have in these areas.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species.
• Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems.
• Valid driver's license.
•This position may include occasional travel to Canada, for which a valid passport is required for entry/reentry into both Canada and the U.S., along with other legal requirements for entry/re-entry into Canada and the U.S.

Desired Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or related field, or equivalent experience and training.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities for this position include conducting setline, gillnet, angling, egg mat, and larval surveys for White Sturgeon in the Kootenai River. Managing the collection, cataloguing, and storage of biological samples. In addition, the incumbents will assist with maintaining and downloading acoustic telemetry receivers. The incumbent will assist with the maintenance and operation of field equipment, including large jet boats and trailers, and other duties as assigned.
