About the position

The Salmon Region is seeking one (1), Fishery Technician (benefited) to assist with monitoring anadromous fisheries on the Upper Salmon River (2-3 weeks on the lower Salmon River in May/early June will also be required if a salmon fishery is opened in that area). The Upper Salmon River is a unique area surrounded by public land that provides recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, and whitewater rafting.

General Information
The incumbent will average 36-40 hours per week but must be willing to accommodate a flexible schedule. Workdays and shifts during salmon and steelhead fisheries will vary depending on season-specific needs. In between fisheries, work hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. During steelhead and salmon fisheries, weekend work and extended, overnight stays in Stanley, ID will be required. Food and lodging (cabin/hatchery dorm/camp trailers/tents) are provided when working out of Stanley.

Incumbents must be able to stand for long periods of time, hike over rough and rugged terrain, safely drive on variable road conditions for multiple hours per shift, and work in adverse weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodations. Housing is not provided in Salmon, ID.

Dates Needed:
March 02, 2026, through mid-November 2026; in between steelhead and salmon fisheries, the incumbent would have the option to work part-time (<30 hrs per week) for approximately four to six weeks to allow the position to extend into mid-November. This part-time work could occur during the months of May, August, or September.
Qualifications
Applicants must be able to interact with the public in a professional and positive manner, work independently and as part of a team, drive for long periods of time under variable road conditions, and follow set protocols while accurately collecting and entering data. Applicants should be self-motivated, detail oriented, and safety conscious. Experience with Microsoft Office programs, mapping software, GPS, fishing techniques, and vehicle maintenance is a plus.

It is preferred that applicants have a Bachelor's degree in fisheries, biology or another related field; or equivalent training and work experience. Candidates with course work, and/or previous experience will be given preference. Must possess a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years of age.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for data collection, supervising temporary employees in the field, and equipment/vehicle maintenance during steelhead and salmon fisheries on the Upper Salmon River. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with employee training. In between fisheries, the incumbent will assist with season planning (hiring/scheduling/training), creating fishery summary reports, downloading/installing water temperature data loggers, and assisting other regional projects with population and spawning ground surveys. This position typically allows for a diverse fisheries work experience in the Salmon Region. Past employees have assisted with screw traps, high mountain lake surveys, river (raft) and tributary (backpack) electrofishing surveys, hatchery spawning, habitat projects, and spawning ground surveys.
