About the position


The Anadromous Fish Screen and Habitat Program is seeking one Fisheries Technician to lead a fisheries monitoring and evaluation crew. This position is part of an interdisciplinary team that operates a large fish screening and habitat restoration program throughout the Upper Salmon Basin to protect ESA listed fish.  

General Information
The Upper Salmon Basin is a beautiful place to work and is surrounded by ample outdoor recreation opportunities including fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, floating, and mountain biking. Job will require some overnight travel to some of the most scenic places in Idaho. Housing is not provided. Work schedule will vary throughout the summer.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a B.S. in Fisheries Science, Wildlife Science, or related field. Applicants should have some leadership experience and willingness to work collaboratively. Applicants should have basic knowledge of anatomy, life history and ecology of various salmonid species and the ability to learn salmonid identification. Applicants should be able to operate personal computers/Bluetooth connected devices. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities
Position will lead a crew in monitoring the abundance, distribution, and habitat use of salmonids. Primary duties include:

- Conducting stream electrofishing, snorkeling, and spawning ground surveys (Chinook and Bull Trout)
- Handling, identifying, and pit-tagging salmonids
- Planning and preparation of sites, food, and camping gear for hitch
- Collecting biological (weights, lengths, etc.) and habitat data (channel width, flow, percent riparian cover etc.)
- Data management (recording, organizing, and QA/QCing biological and habitat data)
- Operating and maintaining PIT Tag detection systems and field equipment.
- Attend statewide snorkel and swift water training

Additional Responsibilities:

- Assisting with salvages
- Assisting with regional fisheries management projects (gillnetting, raft electrofishing, fencing, rotary screw traps)


With or without reasonable accommodation, applicants must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, pack up to 40 pounds for several miles, and walk up to eight miles a day along stream banks and trails. Applicants must be willing to travel extensively and stay in travel trailers and/or camp in semi-remote areas, work in adverse weather conditions, long days, and on holidays, weekends, or nights as necessary. This is an 8 month (benefited) position not to exceed 1385 hours. Housing is not provided.
