About the position

The incumbent will serve as a Fisheries Technician - Snorkel Field Crew Lead (1 position) in IDFG’s Wild Salmon and Steelhead (WSS) program out of Salmon, Idaho. Surveying fish abundance and distribution is an integral part of monitoring Idaho’s fish populations. The crew lead position will mainly require leading a crew of seasonal staff during a snorkeling field season in the Salmon Region, but will also be assisting in the installation and operation of rotary screw traps and spawning ground surveys. The position will assist in various sampling methods listed below (see Responsibilities).  

General Information
Incumbent may be required to travel to remote locations for sampling operations. These positions involve walking several miles over rugged terrain and along stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate four-wheel drive vehicles in rugged terrain; working underwater using snorkel equipment; and working in extreme weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

Note: Housing is not provided. This is a benefitted position not to exceed 1385 hours.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• Possess a valid driver’s license.

• Experience following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.

• Experience recording data.

• Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species.

• Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and
repairing minor mechanical problems.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include: snorkel surveys, habitat surveys, maintaining field equipment, spawning ground surveys, and installing/operating rotary screw traps. 

Additional duties may include: data management (recording, organizing, and error checking in multiple databases), and assisting with other regional fisheries management projects throughout the region when needed (gillnetting, creel surveys, PIT-tagging salmonids, PIT-tag array maintenance, snorkeling, raft electrofishing, and collecting biological data).
