About the position

The Salmon Region is seeking 10 Fisheries Bioaides (non-benefited) spread across four different programs: Lemhi River Intensively Monitored Watershed (3), Screen Program Fisheries Evaluation (3), Wild Salmon and Steelhead Monitoring (4), and Resident Fisheries Management (1). Job responsibilities will be to assist in a variety of duties such as but not limited to fish population surveys on streams, lakes and reservoirs; habitat improvement projects; habitat characterization; creel survey interviews; sample equipment preparation and maintenance; data collection; data entry; collection of biological fish samples (fin clips, otoliths, etc.); and preparation of fish aging structures. Work schedules vary depending on program but follow one of two models: (1) Eight days on duty (10-hr work days) followed by six days off duty, or (2) five days on duty (generally Mon-Fri) and two days off duty depending on project needs, stream conditions, and weather. Positions require front- and backcountry camping while on assignment. All food, equipment, and camping gear (except for sleeping bag) are supplied by IDFG during work shifts. Housing will not be provided during days off. 

Primary duties: snorkeling, electrofishing, lowland and alpine lake (gillnetting/angling), and habitat surveys. Additional duties may include juvenile screw trap operation, tagging fish (PIT, Floy, etc.), and spawning ground surveys.

Note: Housing is not provided. This is a non-benefited position. Hiring and employment dates flexible but position will not exceed 5 months. 

General Information
The Salmon Region encompasses wilderness rivers, mountain streams, and expansive alpine lake systems throughout the Sawtooth Valley, Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness, and Bighorn Crags of the Frank Church. The town of Salmon is situated at the confluence of the Lemhi and Salmon Rivers, and offers many opportunities for fishing, hunting, mountain biking, backpacking, and paddling. Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Possess a valid driver’s license

• Experience following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures

• Some knowledge of biology, zoology, botany, conservation biology or closely related field

• Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish and wildlife species

• Experience recording data

• Experience interacting with the public in a professional setting

• Experience diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems

The ideal candidate will be working towards a BS in fisheries (or related field), or have some equivalent in job experience and training, have the ability to maintain a positive attitude and work ethic through varying environmental conditions, and professionally interact with the angling public and collaborating agencies. Responsibilities
Positions require travel to remote locations for data collection and maintenance activities; require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours over rugged terrain and along water ways; stand and work in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; work under water using snorkel equipment; hitch and pull trailers; lift and carry up to 60+ pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; work in extreme weather conditions, and operate motorized equipment including ATVs, boats, and/or UTVs. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. Frequent (overnight) in-state travel is required. Incumbents working on habitat projects may be working with herbicides and pesticides.
