About the position
The Salmon Region is seeking one Fisheries Technician (8 month benefited) to assist with the regional fisheries Habitat program in Salmon, Idaho and the surrounding area. This position will involve maintaining and monitoring habitat restoration projects, assistance in construction of restoration projects, and data management and analysis.
General Information
Applicants must (with or without reasonable accommodations) work in inclement weather for long periods of time, lift up to 60 pounds, and be able to hike long distances along stream bank and trails. Must accommodate a flexible schedule (holidays, weekends, and nights) as necessary. Housing is not provided.
Qualifications
Required
Applicants must be able to work in adverse conditions on rough, remote terrain, and carry a 60+ lb. pack for several miles, with or without reasonable accommodation. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license. Proficiency in Windows based software such as Word, Access, and Excel is essential for this position. Experience following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures. Experience recording data.
Preferred
It is preferred that applicants have a BS degree in fisheries or related field, or equivalent in applicable outdoor field training and experience. Those with previous habitat restoration, fisheries field work, and/or leadership experience will be given preference. It is desired that individuals have the following skills and experience: navigating by GPS and topographical maps, operating 4x4 vehicles and ATV’s, towing/ backing trailers, and operating chainsaws.

Responsibilities
The fisheries technicians primary responsibilities include assisting the fisheries habitat biologist with many aspects related to developing and implementing habitat restoration projects, and monitoring their effectiveness. The purpose of these projects are to address factors that are limiting the abundance, distribution, and survival of ESA listed anadromous and freshwater resident salmonids in the basin. Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
-Maintaining habitat restoration projects throughout the Upper Salmon basin, with tasks including running irrigation pod systems, weed management, redd surveys, and water quality monitoring.
-Conducting fish salvages during construction on project sites
-Project documentation of construction activities using UAVs, video, and still cameras
-Assisting in developing informational and outreach materials
-Assisting in revegetating disturbed areas (seeding, willow planting, watering)
-Maintaining field equipment and vehicles to optimal standards
-The successful applicant may be involved in fisheries projects as needed, including backpack electrofishing, PIT –tagging salmonids, redd count surveys, operating rotary screw traps and weirs, data management (recording, organizing, and error checking in multiple databases), and various types of data analysis.
