The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Fishery Technician. This position will be located at our Clearwater Regional office located in Lewiston, ID. This is a 8-month, benefitted temporary position and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week. This position will assist with a project monitoring and evaluating the endangered wild steelhead population in the Potlatch River of north-central Idaho. The Potlatch River contains the largest population of wild steelhead in the lower Clearwater River basin. The monitoring project is designed to test the effectiveness of stream restoration efforts on increasing the freshwater production of wild steelhead in the Potlatch River basin.

Supplemental Information: Incumbents may be required to travel to remote locations for fish tagging, trapping, spawning or sampling operations. These positions involve walking several miles over rugged terrain and along stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate four-wheel drive and off-road vehicles in rugged terrain; and working in extreme weather conditions. Incumbents working at fish hatcheries work with toxic chemicals and around heavy dust, high voltage, loud noises, and slippery surfaces. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required)

• Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species.
• Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems.
• Valid driver's license.


In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have experience with data management and following established sampling and data entry protocols, implanting PIT tags, and experience working with adult and juvenile anadromous salmonids. Successful candidates must be able to work independently and in a team setting and demonstrate a high degree of initiative and problem-solving ability. They also must be willing to interact with the public in a positive and professional manner. Additional consideration may be given at the time of the interview to candidates who have this experience. Responsibilities
Responsibilities: These positions provide an incredible opportunity for working with a wide variety of fisheries techniques. Responsibilities include:
• Operating and maintaining juvenile rotary screw traps and adult fish weirs
• Backpack electrofishing
• Conducting stream habitat and water quality monitoring surveys
• Handling, PIT-tagging and collecting biological information from juvenile salmonids.
• Assisting with Chinook salmon spawning ground surveys
• Supervising crews throughout the season
