The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Wildlife Technician. This position will be located at our Southeast Idaho Regional Office located in Pocatello, Idaho. This is a 8-month  benefited temporary position and is expected to work up to 40 hours hours per week. General housing is not provided.

Dates Needed: 

This position is expected to occur from March 1st, 2026, through December 1st, 2026 (there is some flexibility with starting and ending dates).

The candidate in this position will work primarily in Caribou County, Idaho. 

Candidate will serve as a crew lead and will supervise multiple technicians to achieve management goals on the Georgetown Summit Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and Blackfoot River WMA, and occasionally throughout other WMAs and projects in the Southeast Region.

Positions in this classification are used for habitat management areas, data management, wildlife management, or wildlife research. Some positions may travel to remote locations for data collection and maintenance activities and may require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours; operate four-wheel drive and/or off-road vehicles; lift and carry up to 65 pounds; and work in extreme weather conditions. Incumbents working on habitat projects may be working with herbicides and pesticides. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. Frequent (overnight) in-state travel may be required.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required)
• Some knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements; and wildlife habitat
evaluation and management practices.
• Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing biological data.
• Valid driver’s license.

Minimum Qualifications Specialty: (These qualifications are required.)
• Experience operating and performing minor maintenance and upkeep on equipment to include tractors, four-wheel drive trucks, off-road vehicles, and/or small engines and using small hand and power tools.
• Good knowledge of plant identification.


In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership/supervisory experience, including organization, delegation and conflict resolution. The ability to follow instructions, complete assignments, and operate with little direct supervision is ideal, as well as being able to operate as part of a team. The physical ability to engage in strenuous work for extended periods of time including work in adverse weather conditions and work involving lifting/carrying heavy loads is necessary. Knowledge of flood and sprinkler irrigation, fence construction and maintenance, and general farming/ranching practices is preferred. Candidate will be expected to interact with the general public, other agency personnel, and other employees in a professional and courteous fashion. Applicants will be given additional consideration if they have experience performing habitat improvement activities, wildlife identification and some knowledge of wildlife survey methods, vegetation sampling, and safe handling and application of herbicides for vegetation control. Current applicators license is strongly preferred but not required prior to hiring.

Responsibilities
The individual selected for this position will be responsible for assisting the Regional Wildlife Habitat Biologists (RWHB) with the day-to-day operations of the Georgetown Summit and Blackfoot River WMAs, as well as ongoing Regional habitat projects. The individual selected will provide guidance and leadership to 1-4 seasonal technicians during the field season, prioritizing and assigning daily duties, often independently, within the management parameters set by the RWHBs. Close collaboration between RWHBs will be expected, as well as the individual’s invested effort, critical thought and initiative to achieve management goals and improve WMA operations.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
• Oversee daily moving of wheel lines, hand lines, and irrigation equipment
• Oversee irrigation maintenance and repairs
• Completing habitat restoration treatments
• Organizing and assigning duties to seasonal technicians
• Maintain team cohesion, addressing issues as they arise in collaboration with RWHBs
• Foster a good team mentality, emphasizing safe operation, common sense and critical thought
• Coordinate noxious weed control, fence construction/ maintenance, irrigation system set up and take down, fleet equipment care and maintenance
• Monitoring and facilitating public use of properties
• Monitoring habitat treatments and assisting with vegetation surveys
• Assisting with wildlife surveys, trapping, banding, tagging, stocking etc.
• Assist RWHBs in volunteer coordination on certain project needs
• Light construction duties
• Other duties as assigned
