About the position

Idaho Department of Fish and Game, in collaboration with the University of Idaho, is hiring 3 Field Technicians to assist with a study on the effects of winter recreation on behavior and fitness of mule deer and elk. Technicians will be expected to operate snowmobiles and ATVs on and off groomed trails and hike and snowshoe in excess of 5 miles per day under all winter conditions. Technicians will also record behavioral observations for deer and elk and take snow depth and density measurements throughout the day. Other duties will include maintaining vehicles and equipment, classifying camera trap images, locating and handling neonate elk, and assisting with recapture and data collection from study animals.

Housing and food will be provided. Study sites will be 50 mi east of Boise and 30 mi east of Idaho Falls. Some travel between study sites will be expected.

Qualifications
Must have strong communication skills and the ability to interact well with coworkers and the public, be detail-oriented and organized, able to navigate and work independently in remote settings in adverse weather conditions, be able to lift/carry up to 60 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodations, have experience with 4x4 trucks and off-road vehicles and driving in rugged conditions, able to hike and snowshoe in excess of 5 miles per day, and be able to follow a rigid protocol and record detailed data in a field setting.

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good knowledge of wildlife management principles and practices. Must have a good working knowledge of PC operation and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access).

Preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field and with previous field experience including: operating ATVs and snowmobiles, use of Survey 123, ArcGIS, or Google Earth, radio telemetry, sample handling and data management and analysis (including programming with R).
