About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Biological Aide. This position will be located at our Clearwater Regional office located in Lewiston, Idaho. This is a 3-month, non-benefitted temporary position and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week.

General Information
These positions will travel to remote locations for data collection; require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours over rugged terrain and along water ways; stand and work in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; work under water using snorkel equipment; hitch and pull trailers; lift and carry up to 60+ pounds; and work in extreme weather conditions. Operate motorized equipment including ATVs, trail bikes, and/or UTVs. Evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required. Frequent (overnight) in-state travel may be required.

The work schedule will vary, but will generally consist of 10-hour workdays, with 8 days on duty followed by 6 days off duty depending on project needs, stream conditions, weather, and other factors. Applicants must be flexible on their schedule. All food, equipment, and camping gear (except for sleeping bags) are supplied by IDFG during work shifts. The crew is required to camp out in remote backcountry areas with limited or no phone/internet service during their shifts. Housing is not provided during days off.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Experience following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
• Some knowledge of biology, zoology, botany, conservation biology or closely related field.

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have experience with salmonid identification, navigating using topographical maps/software, recording scientific data, and operating ATVs, trail bikes, trailers, and/or UTVs. In general, the applicant will have an enthusiastic attitude towards collaborative and remote field work.
Responsibilities
• Conduct snorkel surveys across Idaho’s Clearwater Region, to identify occupancy and density of anadromous parr.
• Conduct habitat surveys at snorkeled locations.
• Enter and proof field data.
• Prepare and maintain field equipment.
• Complete assigned camp duties during the 8-day shift.
