About the position

SPECIAL NOTIFICATION: This position is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Range Safety Officer. The Range Safety Officer position is part of the Communications Bureau. This position will be located at our Black’s Creek Public Shooting Range in Kuna, ID.  This is a year-round temporary benefited position expected to work up to 30 hours per week. From August through October the role may expand up to 40 hours per week based on seasonal needs. Schedule is Thursday through Sunday and may include some evenings and holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Welcome range visitors and manage the check-in process
  • Accurately handle transactions.
  • Presenting safety briefs.
  • Monitor activity on the firing line to maintain a safe, controlled, and compliant shooting environment.
  • Deliver courteous and knowledgeable service while consistently enforcing range policies to promote safety and respect.
  • Support upkeep of the range, including both firing line and downrange areas, ensuring cleanliness and operational readiness.
  • Work closely with fellow staff and guests to ensure smooth daily operations and a positive experience for all range users.

Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required.)

  • Six months of experience as a range safety officer at a public shooting range.
  • Knowledge of firearm safety rules.
  • Working knowledge of firearms and their basic components.
  • One year of experience with direct customer service including monetary transaction.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license 

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate will hold a current firearms instructor certification from nationally recognized organizations such as Post Officer Standards and Training (POST), National Rifle Association (NRA), United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), or equivalent. A valid Hunter Education Instructor certification is also highly desirable. Additional consideration may be given at the time of the interview to candidates who hold these credentials. Please be sure to include relevant certifications and experience you have in these areas.
