About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking two Wildlife Technicians. These positions will be located at the Panhandle Regional Office in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. We have 2 positions available, one 8-month benefited position and one 5-month non-benefited position. Applicants will be expected to work at least 40 hours per week. Temporary housing may be available for employees only. Pets will not be allowed.  

Employment Dates are as follows: 

8 – Month Technician: September 1 through April 

5 – Month Technician: September 1 through January

FOR THE 8-MONTH BENEFITED POSITION: 

What We Offer:  

The Panhandle Region is seeking two (2) Wildlife Technicians (one 5-month, non-benefited position; one 8-month, benefited position) to assist with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) monitoring and sampling, as well as assist regional wildlife staff in management activities. Incumbents must be able to interact with the public in a professional and positive manner, work independently, and follow established protocols while accurately collecting biological samples and corresponding data. Applicants should be detail oriented, self-motivated, and safety conscious. Previous experience collecting CWD or other biological samples is preferred but not required. 

General Information
With or without reasonable accommodation, incumbents must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., stand for long periods of time, hike over rough and rugged terrain, safely drive for multiple hours per shift, work in adverse weather conditions, and be comfortable collecting samples from dead animals and interacting with the public.

Incumbents will typically work 40 hours with 2 days off per week. Work hours will vary depending on need and incumbents may often be required to work during weekends, evenings, and long shifts, occasionally with minimal supervision. Overnight fieldwork may be required.

Optional camp trailer housing with access to a shared kitchen and bathrooms may be available for this position.
Qualifications
Knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements; and wildlife habitat evaluation and management practices.
Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing biological data.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include: coordinate and operate off-site CWD sampling stations; collect CWD samples from animals brought to the Panhandle regional office and to regional check stations; ensure accurate data collection, management, and entry; organize transport of carcasses to approved disposal locations; conduct regular visits to collect samples and carcasses from drop-off locations, taxidermists, and meat processors; coordinate shipments of samples to the testing lab; sample road killed ungulates for CWD management; interact with the hunting public; assist with other wildlife management tasks as needed such as remote camera placement and retrieval, assisting with depredation issues, and monitoring collared ungulates and conducting mortality investigations; other duties as assigned.
