SPECIAL NOTIFICATION: This position is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking (3) Fishery Technicians. These positions will be located at our Eagle Fish Hatchery located in Eagle, ID. These are a 5-month, non-benefited temporary positions and are expected to work up to 40 hours per week.

Supplemental Information: Incumbents may be required to travel to remote locations for fish tagging, trapping, spawning or sampling operations. These positions involve walking several miles over rugged terrain and along stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate four-wheel drive and off-road vehicles in rugged terrain; and working in extreme weather conditions. Incumbents working at fish hatcheries work with toxic chemicals and around heavy dust, high voltage, loud noises, and slippery surfaces. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

Responsibilities:

  1. Aquaculture
    1. Spawn Sockeye salmon broodstock
    2. Monitor development of eggs and fry.
    3. Feed and monitor growth rates.
    4. Monitor fish health and collect pathology samples.
    5. Monitor remote fish weir and trap.
    6. Transport adults collected at trap to Eagle FH.

       

  2. Data Collection
    1. Record daily data; temperatures, Dissolved Oxygen, feed fed
    2. Record biological data from trapped anadromous Sockeye salmon.
    3. Record monthly length/weight data

       

  3. Equipment Operation
    1. Operate fish tagging equipment
    2. Monitor fish weir/trap
    3. Operate lawn maintenance equipment.

       

Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required)

  • Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species.
  • Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems.
  • Valid driver's license.

     

Minimum Qualifications Specialty: (These qualifications are required.)

  • Some knowledge of aquaculture and the growing and maintaining of fish.

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will assist with facility tours and provide general program background to our customers. They will assist with facility maintenance including operating lawn maintenance equipment. Additional consideration may be given at the time of the interview to candidates who have this experience.
