The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking two (2) Wildlife Technicians. Successful candidates will be hired through a temporary hiring agency and will need to complete all associated paperwork. These positions will be located at our Panhandle Regional Office located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. These are 5-month, non-benefited temporary positions and are expected to work up to 40 hours per week. Housing is available for the employees only. No pets.

Supplemental Information:
Positions in this classification are used for data management, wildlife management, habitat management, or wildlife research. Some positions may travel to remote locations for data collection and maintenance activities and may require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours; operate four-wheel drive and/or off-road vehicles, and ride horses in rugged terrain; lift and carry up to 65 pounds; and work in extreme weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
Responsibilities:
- Work with regional staff as well as on your own to deploy and service wildlife monitoring cameras across the region.
- Deploying and revisiting game cameras involves on- and off-trail travel through steep, heavily vegetated terrain.
- Organizing and processing camera photographs in field and office settings.
- Assisting regional staff on other wildlife-related fieldwork such as collar retrieval and mortality investigations.
- Assist regional staff with vegetation monitoring and surveys.
- Aid in native wildflower and shrub planting projects.
- Conduct surveys for harlequin ducks, monarch butterflies, and other species.
- The technician will, at times, be required to hike 5+ miles a day.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Some knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements; and wildlife habitat evaluation and management practices.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to drive on various types of roads (highways, primitive dirt roads) and navigate using maps and GPS devices.
- Physical ability to engage in strenuous work for extended periods including work in adverse weather conditions and lifting and carrying heavy loads.
- Positive attitude and ability to work as part of a small team.
- Experience recording, summarizing, or analyzing biological data.
- Experience using mountain bikes and/or ATVs in rugged terrain is a plus.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidates will possess a strong basis in knowledge of wildlife species and their habitats usually acquired through 2 years of experience or completion of 2 years of coursework in an accredited Wildlife Biology Program or closely related field. The ideal candidates will have the ability to identify wildlife and plant species and follow instructions to complete assignments with limited direct supervision. Ability and experience in operating and performing minor maintenance and upkeep on equipment to include four-wheel drive trucks, off-road vehicles, and/or mountain bikes and using small hand and power tools would add to the ideal candidate. Additional consideration may be given at the time of the interview to candidates who have this experience.
