The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Fishery Technician. This position will be located at our Eagle Fish Hatchery located in Eagle, ID. This is a 8-month non-benefited temporary position and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week. Housing is available for the employee only. No pets.

Supplemental Information:

Incumbents may be required to travel to remote locations for fish tagging, trapping, spawning or sampling operations. These positions involve walking several miles over rugged terrain and along stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate four-wheel drive and off-road vehicles in rugged terrain; working underwater using snorkel equipment; and working in extreme weather conditions. Incumbents working at fish hatcheries work with toxic chemicals and around heavy dust, high voltage, loud noises, and slippery surfaces. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Data collection. Typical duties: interviews anglers to obtain harvest data and survey angler opinions; collects fish by electrofishing, gillnetting, or trawling; operates fish traps to collect fish movement data; measures and weighs fish; collects scale samples and checks for tags and clipped fins; prepares biological specimens and records information; marks and tags fish; records information from recovered tags; summarizes and reports on biological information collected, and retrieves data using personal computer.
  • Equipment operation. Typical duties: operates power boats for collection of fish and biological data; operates four-wheel drive and off-road vehicles in rugged terrain; tows boats and trailers to field locations; operates and maintains fish tagging and marking equipment; maintains and repairs fish traps and screens; inspects equipment to insure proper working order.
  • Aquaculture. Typical duties: spawns fish; assists in monitoring development of eggs and fry; cleans tanks and raceways; observes fish behavior for signs of stress or disease; grades and sorts fish; loads, transports, and stocks fish; and maintains records.

Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of anadromous and resident fish species.  Good knowledge of fish handling, marking, and PIT tagging (preferred, but not required). Experience recording and summarizing scientific data and using personal computers, operating a power boat, trailering boats/campers, and diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems. 

Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required)

  • Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species.
  • Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems.
  • Valid driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications Specialty: (These qualifications are required.)

  • Employees to participate and to instruct in fishing activities.
  • Experience operating a boat and outboard motor.
