The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Wildlife Technician. This position will be located in Island Park, Idaho. This is a 5-month  non-benefited temporary position and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week.  Housing is available for the employee only. No pets.

Supplemental Information:

 

Positions in this classification are used for data management, wildlife management, or wildlife research. Some positions may travel to remote locations for data collection and may require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours; operate four-wheel drive and/or off-road vehicles, and ride horses in rugged terrain; lift and carry up to 65 pounds; and work in extreme weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

 

Responsibilities:

 

The Wildlife Technician-Grizzly Bear is primarily responsible for leading the grizzly bear outreach and education program and will also assist with research/monitoring efforts and conflict resolution. The primary responsibility of this position is to develop and implement grizzly bear outreach and education programs in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem portion of Idaho.  This position will also assist with capture and monitoring of grizzly bears, collecting cervid biological samples, and deploying remote monitoring cameras.  The successful applicant may also assist on multiple projects in the wildlife and fisheries programs in the Upper Snake Region. The technician will work both individually and as a team and follow standardized protocols to collect biological data.

  • Development and implementation of outreach and education programs throughout eastern Idaho to educate and inform a wide array of the public about bear ecology and management, with a goal of reducing conflict potential between bears and humans.
  • Use various forms of communication and technology to reach a diverse group of stakeholders and carry the Bear Aware program's message, promoting public awareness in areas with bears.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other IDFG employees, State and federal agency personnel, non-governmental organizations, local landowners, the public, and sportspersons.
  • Provide appropriate training to IDFG, other agency personnel, and the public as related to grizzly bear management, conflict prevention, mitigation, and resolution.   
  • Work to reduce human-grizzly bear conflicts by working with the public, private landowners, businesses, agencies, and livestock producers.

 

  • Capture/handle grizzly bears for research and conflict resolution objectives.
  • Use of radio telemetry equipment and remote cameras for monitoring grizzly bears.
  • Data collection, record keeping, data analysis, and report writing.

 

Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required)

 

  • Some knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements.
  • Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing biological data.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Minimum Qualifications Specialty: (These qualifications are required.)

  • Experience operating and performing minor maintenance and upkeep on equipment to include four-wheel drive trucks, off-road vehicles, and/or motorized boats and using small hand and power tools.
  • Experience with wildlife capture and handling, monitoring of marked wildlife, and field necropsy techniques.

 

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have training and/or work experience in wildlife capture and handling techniques.  The ideal candidate will have wildlife management experience, preferably in large carnivore management, large carnivore capture and handling, and large carnivore ecology.  Proficiency in the use of Microsoft applications and experience using topographical maps/software and GPS is a plus.  The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the aspects of human dimensions within the wildlife profession and working with diverse stakeholders to facilitate efficient and effective education and outreach regarding grizzly bear management and conflict resolution.  The ideal candidate will be effective and comfortable in communicating with varied audiences and often in conflict or challenging situations while accurately conveying Idaho Department of Fish and Game policy and goals.  The incumbent will possess the ability to work long, irregular hours under adverse conditions and extreme public scrutiny as part of a team and independently with little direct supervision.  The ideal candidate will also possess exceptional decision-making ability under difficult circumstances and have excellent interpersonal communication skills.  The ideal candidate will also have the ability to safely and appropriately handle live, potentially dangerous animals in remote, sensitive, and hazardous settings. The preferred candidate will also have prior experience with trail cameras, working in bear country (preferably grizzly bear) and with large carnivore handling.  The incumbent will possess the skills or ability to learn to use controlled pharmaceuticals, wildlife capture equipment, trailers, radio telemetry equipment, power equipment, and tools.  Additional consideration may be given at the time of the interview to candidates who have this experience.
