About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking 3 temporary wildlife technicians ($15.00/hr; non-benefited) to work on a crew assisting in American White Pelican population management and monitoring in Island Park, Idaho. Applicants must be available to start work in early/mid April, and end in mid/late June. Candidates must include their earliest available start date in the application. 

General Information
This position is based in Island Park, Idaho and job duties will primarily be conducted within and around Trude’s Island on Island Park Reservoir. Technicians will implement measures to keep the number of nesting pelicans on Island Park Reservoir in line with objectives outlined in the Management Plan for the Conservation of American White Pelicans in Idaho (2016-2015). The work schedule is somewhat flexible (while maintaining 40 hrs/week), but some weekend work will be required. Housing will be provided in the Island Park/Mack’s Inn area. There will likely be opportunities to assist with other projects (fisheries and wildlife) throughout 2.5 month period. Beyond the excellent professional development opportunities provided in these positions, world-class angling opportunities, proximity to Yellowstone National Park (<20 miles), and populations of many charismatic megafauna (Moose, Grizzly Bear, Elk, Pronghorn, etc...) in the Island Park area make for an enviable place to reside during your employment.

Physical requirements: With or without reasonable accommodations, applicants must be able to work in extreme weather, walk up to 8 miles per day, and be able to work independently and collect high quality data.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of at least one of the following: 1) Good knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements and some knowledge of wildlife habitat including evaluation and management practices; OR 2) Good knowledge of biology, zoology, botany, conservation biology or closely related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with bird identification and/or surveys. Experience with 4x4 trucks, trailers, snowmobiles, ATV's, canoes, powerboats, snowshoes/skis.
Responsibilities
Technicians will use physical presence to deter pelicans from nesting on Trude Island. Technicians will be responsible for collecting data on the behavior and nesting of pelicans as well as other waterbirds using the island. Technicians will be responsible for safely navigating to the island by snowmobile, ATV, canoe, powerboat, or other means.
