About the position

The Upper Snake Region of Idaho Department of Fish & Game is looking to fill the Sr. Wildlife Habitat Technician for Market Lake Wildlife Management Area (MKWMA).  The selected candidate will supervise multiple technicians to achieve management goals on-site and occasionally throughout the Upper Snake Region. The Sr. Wildlife Habitat Technician is responsible for implementing the management plan and maintaining wildlife habitat on Market Lake WMA.  This position may involve some irregular hours and weekends.

The position will be located at MKWMA within the Upper Snake Region of Idaho.  MKWMA is a 6,000-acre wetland complex next to the Snake River. Located fifteen miles north of Idaho Falls in Roberts, ID, MKWMA is a waterfowl hunting destination as well as big game wintering location and provides birding opportunities throughout the year.

General Information
Terms of Employment: This 8.5-month per year benefitted position starts on or about 3/3/25 and ending on or about 11/28/25 (1,385 hours/yr.) with flexible stop/start dates dependent on workload and selected candidate’s situation.

The individual selected for this position will be responsible for assisting the Regional Wildlife Habitat Biologist and with the operation of the Market Lake Wildlife Management Area (MKWMA) and ongoing habitat projects. The selected candidate will provide guidance and leadership to up to two seasonal technicians during the season: prioritizing and assigning daily duties, often independently. This position may require the individual to, with or without reasonable accommodations, work some weekends, complete physically demanding projects, work in adverse weather, early starts (i.e. bird surveys) with occasional late nights (i.e. nocturnal animal surveys), identify plant species, use herbicides (as well as mechanical) for weed control, use GIS/GPS systems, safely operate 4WD trucks, tractors, ATV’s, chainsaws, water irrigation systems and power planting augers. Experience with these skills are preferred. Training will be provided for some activities.
Qualifications
Good knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements and some knowledge of habitat development practices and procedures. Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing wildlife biological data. Valid driver's license.

Strong preference will be given to individuals who have:
Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, biology, or related field, or equivalent in training and experience.
Demonstrated leadership/supervisory experience, including organization, delegation, and conflict resolution.
Operating 4×4 vehicles, ATV’s, boats, trailers, farm equipment and heavy equipment.
Familiarity with basic maintenance of large machinery and small engines.
Working knowledge of farm/ranch management.
Obtain professional applicators’ license within first 3 months of hiring and use various herbicides.
Some knowledge of wildlife survey methods and identifying wildlife species.
Some knowledge of vegetation survey methods and plant taxonomy.
The ability to follow instructions, complete assignments, and operate with little direct supervision.
The ability to interact with the public, other agency personnel, and other employees in a courteous fashion.
Using power tools and completing small construction projects.
Responsibilities
Assist with habitat management activities on Market Lake WMA and in the region. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Design, implement and monitor habitat treatments. Represent MKWMA at Cooperative Weed Management Area meetings. Organize and assign duties to seasonal technicians. Lead and implement the MKWMA invasive species/noxious weed control program. Monitor and facilitate public use of the property. Perform light construction and equipment maintenance and repair. Perform waterfowl surveys, trapping, and banding. Quantify vegetative communities
