About the position

The Fisheries Research office in Nampa, Idaho is seeking three 8 month benefited Fishery Technicians ($17.32/hour DOE; plus competitive benefits) to work as members of a fisheries research team based out of the Nampa Fisheries Research Office in Nampa, Idaho. Each fisheries technician hired will act as the crew leader for either Wild Trout Evaluations, Hatchery Trout Evaluations, or Lakes and Reservoirs Research in addition to assisting as a crew member with all projects. These positions will consist of fieldwork throughout the state of Idaho from April/May – September/October followed by office and laboratory work through November/December (start and end dates are flexible).

General Information
This position requires frequent travel with a research team throughout Idaho for periods of up to six (6) days working a minimum of 40 hours per week. Work schedules may be variable including early/late hours. With or without reasonable accommodations, incumbents must be able to work and camp in remote locations under adverse weather conditions, hike long distances (>9 miles) in rough terrain, operate ATVs (training provided) and four (4) wheel drive vehicles in steep/rough terrain, handle live and dead fish; wade in swift flowing waters; and lift/carry up to 50 lbs. Camping equipment, all food items while in the field, and transportation are provided to and from field sites.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications require the incumbent has some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of fish species and a valid driver’s license.

Preferred qualifications include but are not limited to a B.S. degree in fisheries, biology, or a related field, or equivalent in training and work experience; experience with data collection and management; experience sampling and identifying fish; ability to navigate with GPS in backcountry environments; good handwriting skills; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems; and experience leading crews and working independently. Attention to detail, a commitment to safety practices, and professional conduct are all competitive qualities.
Responsibilities
Duties may include electrofishing streams, rivers, and lakes (day and nighttime); backpacking; operating, transporting, and trailering outboard/jet motorboats; gillnetting alpine/lowland lakes; stocking fish and collecting biological samples; tagging fish (t-bar anchor tags, PIT tags); maintaining and repairing equipment (sampling equipment, vehicles, etc.); collecting, recording, and managing data; mounting and ageing hard structures from fishes; purchasing field supplies; directly overseeing 1-3 bio-aides; and leading a crew of 2-8 staff in the field.
