About the position

The Department is seeking two Fisheries Biological Aides to work on sportfish population surveys in the Magic Valley Region. The incumbent will serve as part of a regional fisheries crew conducting various field projects and fishery surveys on streams, lakes, and reservoirs in the Magic Valley Region. These positions are non-benefitted with an approximate 3.5-month term of employment.

Qualifications
College coursework toward BS degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Biology, or related field, preferred. Applicants should have some knowledge of: life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species; identifying various fish species; operating a boat and outboard motor, and taking field notes. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel and experience diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems with outboard motors or generators is a plus.

Extended travel will be required at times to remote locations for fish sampling operations. This position involves walking up to ten miles a day over rugged terrain carrying a large backpack and along stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds for short distances; and working in inclement weather conditions. Successful applicants need to possess excellent independent decision-making skills.
Responsibilities
Work as part of regional fisheries crew conducting various field projects and fishery surveys on streams, lakes, reservoirs, and alpine lakes in the Magic Valley Region. Sampling methods include gillnetting, electrofishing, trap netting, and creel surveys. Additional responsibilities include data entry, equipment maintenance (boats, nets, etc.) and interacting with the public. Work generally consists of a 40-50 hour week, Monday through Friday, with some night and weekend work required. Some duties require extended stays overnight in remote locations.
